Since when do we reward sex offenders with TV time?
Published on May 24, 2005 By thatoneguyinslc In Current Events
Normally i am a supporter of freedom of the press. With that said...

As many of you know, Mary Kay Latourneau wed Vili Fulau over the weekend. Fulau was the young boy she raped when she was a teacher. This is bizarre enough on it's own.

But now Entertainment Tonight (being the oh so reputible news outlet they are) is airing a special segment on their show with exclusive coverage of the wedding. This makes me sick!
Since when is this newsworthy? We are rewarding sexual predators with media coverage? So it's different because she's a woman right? If this is the standard, where is Access Hollywood's coverage of Priests who enter civil unions with their altar boys? How about The Tom Green Polygamist X-mas special on Fox? Where's the R. Kelly interview on Oprah?

Excuse me while i hurl.

Thanks for reading,

You're right, Entertainment Tonight is not a news outlet. It's entertainment. I think you're overreacting.

Over reacting? She's a convicted sex offender that married her victim. That's sick enough Icon. But to sell the rights and put it on TV.. What kind of message does that send to the kids?

Like I said before, as far as societal acceptance, where homosexuality was in the 70s, Pedophilia is today. The child molester Mary Kay Latourneau will become the "Jodi" of the TV show Soap. She already has a lot of supporters, well wishers and defenders.

Think about it, the only reason for her celebrity is she molested a 13 year old student countless times.

{{{{Disclaimer: No I'm not saying that homosexuals are all a bunch of pedophiles here. I'm just using homosexuality as an example of how societal taboos become acceptable by degrees.}}}}

I rest my case. ;~D

I'm not saying it's entertaining, but it's not on a hard news program.

Not the point guys. It's MEDIA COVERAGE. News is only a small part of the Media world. They run promos for that show 24-7 365.

Ted, There's a world of difference between a gay tv character and a child sex offender.

MM,

That's baaaaarrrrfff, not Ralph! ( a fine Scottish name )

Oneguy,

Glorification of the teacher/student relationship has been marketed in the past ( Song by the Police - "Don't stand so close to me " ) Don't make it right tho, think I'll join ya'll in paying homage to their vows............BAAAARRRFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, I think we have found that illusive common ground between conservatives and liberals (progressives).  So I will stand in line behind you and Moderateman.

Second, You are correct, but that was not Ted's point.  WE dont find pedophelia acceptable, but it could become easily become acceptible given current trends.  And that is the scariest part.

Ralph (I dont know how or when) is a common verb to describe the act of regurgitating.  I did not know Ralph was Scottish, but will try to be sensitive to those who are Ralphs.

Agreed, which was the reason for the disclaimer. No, I don't think Gay people are all a bunch of pedophiles (although there are Gay people who are pedophiles, but one doesn't automatically make someone the other.

Thanks Dr. Guy, for seeing the point instead of the example.

What we are witnessing with the Mary Kay LeChildmolester case IS the acceptance (and even defense) of child molestation in our society.

I don't think most people really think of a Female raping a boy in the same light that reverse gender roles create.

I myself think lucky kid.

This is what media does; sensationalize news

You'd be surprised how many pedophiles think that about all their "partners". If you can get one to use the word "victim" before years of therapy, you're lucky.

The fact that any adult would consider a sexual relationship between an adult and a 13 year old "ok", says much about how low we've already sank.

Yes, many 13 year olds have fantasies about adults. The problem is, now we have adults with fantasies about the 13 year old, and now this sleazy show is going to celebrate one of them... and people will defend that predatory pedophile.
