Since when do we reward sex offenders with TV time?
Published on May 24, 2005 By thatoneguyinslc In Current Events
Normally i am a supporter of freedom of the press. With that said...

As many of you know, Mary Kay Latourneau wed Vili Fulau over the weekend. Fulau was the young boy she raped when she was a teacher. This is bizarre enough on it's own.

But now Entertainment Tonight (being the oh so reputible news outlet they are) is airing a special segment on their show with exclusive coverage of the wedding. This makes me sick!
Since when is this newsworthy? We are rewarding sexual predators with media coverage? So it's different because she's a woman right? If this is the standard, where is Access Hollywood's coverage of Priests who enter civil unions with their altar boys? How about The Tom Green Polygamist X-mas special on Fox? Where's the R. Kelly interview on Oprah?

Excuse me while i hurl.

Thanks for reading,

Maybe I am still thinking too old' boy fashioned where sex with a female teacher would have gotten you a slap on the back.

Hard for me too let go of that.

If it was a male teacher seducing a young boy I'd say string him up.

They are about entertainment and the wedding is a freak show. Surpised? Hardly. They did the same sort of stuff with Tonya Harding and Amy Fisher and any other cretin that gets in the news by doing something despicable.

ET is not a hard hitting news show, I'll concede that point. But this is being reported and given air time. I think it's terrible that we are basically telling people that while you'll go to jail for engaging in this type of act, we'll give you something for your troubles afterwards if you happen to gain some noteriety along the way. That is the wrong message to send to pedophiles, whether male or female.

There is nothing "special" about this situation. Unusual? Yes. Special? No. It should not be treated or glorified as being special in any way. Which is what is happening in an entertainment media outlet that is just as effective, if not more so, at gaining attention to something as a real news media outlet. People watch this show and drink in every gossippy tidbit.

Consider the message being sent to victims of molestation. If you "love" the person that does this to you, then there may be a payoff for you in the end! Otherwise, you're just a victim. What kind of choice is that?

THANK YOU CHIP!

I think "seduce" is a more appropriate word in this case than "rape." If a guy doesn't want to have sex, he can't get an erection.

I'm not a guy but no way with this one! A guy will get an erection whether he wants to have sex or not. It's a natural response. But the guy in that case was a 12 year old child. She was a pedophile and what she did was wrong. It should not be glorified in any way.

He's an adult now and much older and obviously in love and all that. Fine, they can live their lives with their children. I also don't agree that Entertainment tonight or any other media should glorify this. What are other children 12-17years thinking? It should not be seem as ok at all!

OK, so let me get this straight...

We should ban pit bulls but we should legalize and encourage pedophilia so long as the "perpetrator" is female and the "victim" is male? Sorry, sushi...doesn't wash.

If Ms. LeTourneau and Mr. Falaau chose to get married, that's their right now that he's an adult, I suppose . But we shouldn't condone or excuse her grossly inappropriate actions (not to mention the fact that a male pedophile would still be languishing in jail, which is as it should be.)

Gid I am surprised, you should know better.
Stay on topic and don't use other arguments from other threads to back your own.

Back this this arg...
I am just being honest that I still do not relate a Female "Raping" a boy the same way a Man does a girl. Gid, big jump from that to trying to legalize these actions.
Come on now!

sushi,

My point was, you've made it clear that you desire an authoritarian society. Which is fine, as that's your political outlook although I don't support it personally. But despite wanting an authoritarian society, you don't see female on male pedophilia as being abhorrent.

Technically, by the same standard, many male on female instances of pedophilia aren't "rape" per se; the victim is willing. But that doesn't make the action any less wrong. Consent, at that age, doesn't even enter the picture.

Then why bring it up in another blog when it has nothing to do at all with the current topic?

Thanks for a word from the ignorant gallery (don't take that wrong, most people are ignorant when it comes to predatory pedophiles. I don't mean it as calling names). Guess what, kids get erections all the time. Guess what, the predatory pedophile USUALLY has consent from the kid. Guess what, the fact that this attractive woman was messing with him probably got him off. Guess what, it is still illegal, it is still child molestation, and she is still a twice convicted child molester.

Like I said, para...in ten years, she'll be regarded as the Rosa Parks of pedophile rights...just watch!

Sad statement on our direction as a society, really

Gid,

I am still waiting to hear how my tendency towards an authoritarian society has anything to do with this topic or what I have said in this art...

Don't make me ask you to black list me again.

Yes, when they see or think about an ATTRACTIVE woman.

the fact that this attractive woman was messing with him probably got him off.

How many guys want to have sex with a woman they don't find attractive?

Way off topic, but have you ever heard of "hogging", or the "200lbs" "300lbs" or "400lbs" clubs? ;~D

Kidding aside, the point is, even if a kid finds the adult attractive and welcomes the attention and sexual activity, it's still molestation.

Kids can have all the crushes on teachers they want (my first was my 4th grade teacher), and teachers sometimes feel attractions towards their students (as far as I know there's still no law against that). However, we expect our adults to have a little more control than to molest kids, especially in their care.

If Mary Kay LeMolester was a Catholic Nun, would we even be having this discussion?
