Life behind the zion curtain, politics, music, IT, things that go fast, tasteless humor, and everything anti-bush.

I travel a lot on business.

Some people think of air travel as a luxury. A fantastic voyage to places they only dream about. When I look at an airplane, I see a bus with wings. I guess it's all perspective really.
Over the past week or so as the 5th anniversary of September 11th approached, more and more people have been asking me if I planned on flying on 9/11.
As it so happens... I'll be boarding a flight this evening. Just like the past two years. Three years flying on that ominous day. September 11th.

The second question is usually "Do you really feel safe flying on 9/11?" I usually reply with something like... "It's the safest freakin' day of the year to fly. Plenty of seats too."

I love the looks that I get when I say that. A mixture of horror and slight amusement. The old "deer in headlights" look for lack of a better term. I say this not out of disrespect to those lost in the events of that day, it's more of a tribute to the rest of us who make our living flying the friendly skies. We know the potential for it to happen again. We live with it every day when we show up at the airport.

I refuse to let some nutjob hiding in a cave somewhere in Pakistan dictate to me how i make my living. I'm sure others have different reasons, but i suspect most of them feel as I do.

You see, if we allow them to intimidate us into deviating our lives because we are "afraid" of them taking another shot at us, They don't have to hijack planes.

They win.

If we allow them to take their fight to our minds. They win.

If we allow them to intimidate us to the point where even something as harmless as a family trip to Disneyland becomes something you have to rethink. They win.

FDR said it best immediately after Pearl Harbor. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" It still holds true to this day. Fear is their weapon. Fear is the mindkiller. Fear is what makes you look under the bed for the boogeyman. He's not really there. But you believe he is there out of fear that he really is there. There's no boogeyman. Osama and the rest of his cult of fanatics want to be that boogeyman. You want to know how to keep that from happening?

Don't be afraid.

Fear is only an emotion. Emotions can be controlled. The ability to control that emotion lies in only one place. Your mind.

Tonight i'll get on that plane, sit down and order a drink, and offer a toast to all of those who were lost on that horrible day, and also to those who were left behind. I will also remind myself that it could have very easily been me in one of those seats on one of those planes. I will thank the big man in the clouds for not making that the case. I will also say a little prayer that it will never happen again, and that we will finally catch that son-of-a-bitch who caused all of this, and finish off all his buddies wherever they are hiding as well.

Never forget those who perished, never forgive those who are responsible.

And while you are at it, Don't bother looking under the bed. The dustbunnies won't hurt you.

Thanks for reading, and God bless...

I look at them as cattle cars!  They usually pack you in so tight, you cant take a deep breath until you get off! (Unless we get that rare chance at first class).

more power to you!  Where you headed to this time?

SLC~

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm not much of a flyer, but I take some dramamine, order a stiff drink on the flight, and usually pass out for a little while.

Air travel is the safest its ever been. I look at it this way: if it's my turn to go, it's my turn to go, and I guess I'd rather go in a plane crash and be dead instantaneously than have a stroke and be in a home drooling for ten years before I die.

So...this spring...I'm going to hop a plane to Vienna, Austria to visit a buddy, and I'm not even going to hold my breath. We can't just not go on living because something bad happened five years ago. If we do that, then those bastards in that cave win. And I for one won't let them control my life.

Sad that most people allow fear to control their lives. They are too afraid to face this enemy and they are too afraid to face our own President and tell him to stop messing things up. Sad,

No, just fly through a hub!  We are not a big enough city to have many direct flights, so we fly to a hub, and then on to our destination.  Usually Delta or American.

BTW:  If you see the sun, write about it!  I still dont believe it exists in Seattle!

Greetings from Zhengzhou China. I am an Americanhere working as a teacher of English. I have lots of questions form my students about 9 11 and those who were involved in it. Some are good questions while oters may seem stupid. I doagree that this nutcake wh is hiding somewhere needs to be found and disposed of but also those who are protectinghim as well. I am not sure if they ever will catchhim unless fo course some nutcake in washington decides to drop several hundred bombs in a mass bombing on tyhe area and gets a hit but doubt if he has the intelligence to undertsnad how to do this without risking face.

I was supposed to fly on that day back to Taiwan where I was there teaching but left a few days earlier going through San Fran instead of LA. Smatrt move on my part and wondered what if.... my one sister made the statementthat she wished that I was so she could get lots of money. Sad hey?

yes i wonder about flyingand tryto do some every two years so this is time again t fly and see what happens.

Hear Hear!

Last year I was recently at an airport hotel at Narita. In the breakfast queue, I got chatting to a japanese born, married to an american woman. She told me they had planned on visiting the husband family in scotland that autumn, but changed their plans due to fear of terrorism.

If they didn't like scotland for various reasons (wet, midges, bagpipes), or really liked Japan, or it was her families turn, etc, I would have smiled and carried on making polite conversation.

But she picked the one non-legitimate reason. I told her I was disgusted that an american of all people should be doing the terrorists job for them. Perhaps I was being a bit strong about it, but I still consider it a valid point.

The best thing we can do against terrorists is to not let them dictate our actions in a positive or negative direction. A bit of sufferance of security measures is one thing (my feelings on show-security is another topic...) but letting the terrorists choose which country gets your tourists dollars is simply admitting defeat.

Norman,

That's pretty cold blooded of your sister to say something like that.

Iain,

I could write a series of books about my experiences with the TSA. But in the end I grudgingly give them their due. Also, i completely agree with your point.

Charles,

I will never understand why the current administration decided to take the course that they have. History has shown us what happens when you fight a two front war. Usually the aggressor gets their ass handed to them in the process. I hope that we are the exception to the rule.
