Shovel...I'm so torn. I know what you're talking about, and I agree that something has to be done.  One part of me wants that mudering bastard to cry and piss his pants with fear on the way to his execution...but another part realizes that killing him, whilst it rids society of his evil, does no good.  It doesn't bring anyone back, it doesn't make anything right again.

I guess I'm going to have to come off the fence sometime, huh?

No, the fence is a good place to be. Who is wise among us to know the right thing? Oh yeah, check your e-mail. You'll see why I like to write for the distraction it brings

Execution of Scott Peterson. Well he did kill his wife and unborn child. Some would say an eye for an eye type of thing, and I have to agree with that myself, at least in this case. But there are other reason that will sound cruel maybe but none the less true. It cost around $26,000 per year, per inmate to house them in a prison system, and that is if they do not require extra attention or have medical issue. Do you really want to spend your tax dollars feed someone like this that committed such a crime? I myself do not. Cold but true.

It also costs money to buy the necessary supplies/equipment, hire people, and keep everything working. Plus the extra time it takes in court to decide whether or not to use the death penalty. Plus, what if he didn't commit the crime? So many people have been killed and then later been found innocent. It costs money to keep anyone in jail. Why don't we just kill everyone?

Morally, I don't think anything can justify taking a life except to save another. I believe anyone has the moral right to his/her life no matter what, even if others think its justified to take it. That way, people are protected against any oppressive system that thinks its justified to kill black people or whatever. At this point, Laci and her baby are already dead. Keeping Scott in jail would serve the same purpose as killing him. The only reasons people like the death penalty are revenge and money. First, human lives should never be used as a tool for revenge. Killing Scott won't bring back Laci and the baby. Putting him in jail for life would be punishment enough. Second, sure, money is important, but its nothing compared to a human life, even one that has committed murder.

That's what appeals are for. Besides, it's never pleasurable for the wrongfully accused, even if they aren't put to death. In fact, I'm willing to wager that at least one person has died in prison who hasn't committed the crime for which they were thrown in there. And sentencing always takes some time.

So, by keeping prisons, people aren't protected against an oppressive system that thinks it's justified to incarcerate black people or whatever?

I didn't realize everybody who supported the death penalty supported it because they are vindictive and greedy. By the way, what's the point of putting him in prison for life if not for revenge? After all, unless he's planning to kill again, it's not as if putting him in prison will bring Laci and the unborn child back from the dead.

Well...I'm a supporter of the death penalty for the most part, with a few exceptions. I think in this case the punishment is fitting for the crime. But like i said earlier the state of California is notoriously slow when it comes to executing of death row inmates.

Let's face it, they ain't Texas.

It's cheaper on the taxpayer for the guy to sit in prison than to go through the zillions of appeals for decades until they finally kill him, if it even happens. Therefore, I'm in favor of the cheaper method. And I'm fairly sure that the small number of deaths as a result from capital punishment don't serve as much of a deterrent, so that makes it something of a lame duck. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it (I wasn't on the jury, I wouldn't know), but I don't think it's a practical solution.

Dharma is right. Nothing any of us do will bring Laci and her son back. Nothing will make this right. But there are some things you just can't let stand. I don't know how this kind of thing can happen, what pushes the button in the back of a man's mind, where he turns from a jerk into a monster by deciding that the solution to his problems is to kill his wife and hide the body. They need to take him out into the San Francisco bay, wrap him in 50 feet of chain and toss him in.
